Lula criticizes UN, says multilateral bodies have failed Gaza - Salam
Assalamu Alaikum - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva openly criticized the United Nations and other international institutions, saying they have “stopped working” and failed to protect civilians in Gaza. He made the remarks after meeting Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, ahead of a regional summit where he may also meet US President Donald Trump. "Who can accept the genocide that has been going on in the Gaza Strip for so long?" Lula told reporters, adding that the multilateral bodies set up to prevent such tragedies are no longer functioning properly. "Today, the UN Security Council and the UN no longer function," he said.
Lula also took a veiled jab at Trump, noting that a leader’s dignity matters more than awards. Trump had left Washington for an Asian trip that includes talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and attending a signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, which he helped facilitate.
The White House recently criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee after the prize went to Venezuela’s opposition leader and not to Trump, who has repeatedly claimed credit for resolving several conflicts - a point many observers question. Lula and Trump have had tense relations after disputes over the prosecution of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, including US tariffs and sanctions tied to that situation. Bolsonaro was sentenced in Brazil to a lengthy prison term over his role in a failed coup attempt following his 2022 election loss to Lula. Relations between the two leaders have nevertheless begun to warm after quick meetings at the UN General Assembly and a phone call in October, and they discussed the possibility of meeting at the ASEAN summit.
May Allah guide leaders to justice and protect innocent civilians everywhere.
