Isaac Newton’s View of Prophets and Monotheism - A Short Note, assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum. I came across an interesting note about Isaac Newton and wanted to share it in a simple way. Newton rejected the doctrine of the Trinity and held beliefs closer to Unitarian Christianity. There are also reports that he respected the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as someone sent by God to guide the Arabs back to belief in one God. One source mentioning this is a 19th-century collection of Newton’s correspondence (J. Edleston, Correspondence of Sir Isaac Newton and Professor Cotes, London: John W. Parker, 1850). In that volume there’s an account saying a Swedish professor, Björnstahl, heard from an Anabaptist preacher in Amsterdam that during a visit to England in 1738 people at Cambridge related anecdotes about Newton. One of those anecdotes, translated to English, says Newton believed Muhammad had been sent by God to lead the Arabs from darkness toward belief in one God, though Newton reportedly did not accept the miraculous tales in the Quran or about the Prophet’s life. It’s worth noting that there’s no clear evidence Newton ever studied Islamic scripture in depth, so this comes through secondhand reports rather than direct writings by Newton himself. Still, it’s an interesting historical tidbit showing how some scholars saw prophets of monotheism, including the Prophet ﷺ, as important figures guiding people toward tawhid. Salam.
