Iranian Supertanker in Indonesian Waters Analyzed as Intelligence Activity
The presence of an Iranian supertanker in Indonesian waters has caught the attention of international analysts. Intelligence and geopolitical observer Amir Hamzah assesses that this event is not just ordinary energy trade activity, but part of an operation reflecting a shift in Indonesia's strategy within the dynamics of global geopolitics. Amir conveyed this in a statement on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
The very large crude carrier (VLCC) is suspected of having entered Indonesian territory with an unusual sailing pattern, including by turning off its automatic identification system (AIS). In maritime intelligence practice, this method is often linked to high-risk operations, indicating the ship's movement is not normal commercial activity. Amir emphasized that tracking avoidance efforts are usually related to high-level political or economic sensitivity.
Indonesia currently still faces dependence on crude oil imports, with domestic production not yet fully meeting domestic needs. In this context, Iran offers an economically and politically attractive alternative, including competitive prices and flexible trading schemes, especially considering the Western sanction pressures that Iran faces.
