Iran and US Report on Warship Incident in Strait of Hormuz
According to a report by Iran's Fars news agency, a US warship attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz was forced to turn back after being struck by missiles from the Iranian navy. The report, which has not been independently verified, claims that Iran considered the US ship's passage a violation of traffic security near Jask Island.
A US official interviewed by Al Jazeera denied the claim, stating that reports of a missile attack on an American naval vessel are false and fabricated by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The Iranian military had previously threatened to attack US forces if they entered the Strait of Hormuz, as stated by its commander on Monday (May 4, 2026).
The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that starting May 4, they will support 'Project Freedom' to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This support includes 15,000 personnel, guided-missile destroyers, and over 100 aircraft, to secure the route that carries a quarter of the world's oil trade.
