Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un: Twin Earthquakes Hit Southern Philippines, Causing Loss and Tsunami Alerts
Assalamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters, I wanted to share some sad news from the southern Philippines. On Friday, two strong earthquakes struck the same area hours apart. The first one was a 7.4 magnitude quake that sadly took the lives of at least seven people, caused landslides, and led to coastal evacuations due to fears of a tsunami.
The second earthquake, measuring about 6.8 magnitude, also resulted in a local tsunami warning. Both earthquakes happened along the Philippine Trench fault line near Manay town in Davao Oriental province, at depths ranging from 10 to 37 kilometers, according to the experts there.
Officials mentioned that the second quake is what they call a "doublet quake," meaning two separate quakes close in time and location but with different intensities and epicenters. There are concerns that the nighttime quake might have weakened buildings already damaged by the first.
People living near the coast were urged to move to higher ground after warnings were issued in the Philippines and nearby countries. Rescue and relief teams are preparing to assist once it is safe to do so, with the authorities still assessing the damage.
Schools in Davao city were evacuated as a precaution, and warnings were given for waves possibly reaching up to 3 meters in some coastal areas. The community was reminded to secure boats and avoid waterfronts until further notice.
May Allah protect everyone affected and grant patience and strength to the families who lost loved ones. Let us keep them in our duas. The Philippines continues to face such natural challenges due to its location, but with trust in Allah and preparedness, we hope for safety and recovery soon.
