In Baghdad, they're investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a candidate from a Sunni party.
Assalamu alaikum. May Allah have mercy on the deceased and grant patience to his family.
Iraq’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al‑Sudani ordered a special commission to investigate the death of parliamentary candidate Saffa al‑Mashhadani. According to reports, he died Wednesday morning in the Tarmiyah area of Baghdad: an explosive device had been attached under his car. The politician died at the scene, and four of his companions were wounded.
Saffa al‑Mashhadani was a member of Baghdad’s regional council and planned to run for parliament as part of the Siyad coalition, which is led by Sunni politician and businessman Hamis al‑Khandjar. Iraq’s general parliamentary elections are scheduled for September 11; voters will elect 329 members of the Council of Representatives, who will then appoint the country’s prime minister and president.
Parliament Speaker Mahmud al‑Mashhadani condemned the killing and demanded that those responsible be found and punished, noting that this attack appears to be an attempt to destabilize the situation ahead of the vote.
No group has claimed responsibility so far. At the same time, security officials note that attaching explosive devices under cars is a tactic that has been used repeatedly by various armed formations in the country.
As a reminder, Islam emerged in the 7th century and strongly influenced the history, culture and social development of many peoples. In Arabic, “Islam” means surrendering oneself to the will of Allah. Today this religion has more than a billion followers.
