How This Article Brought Me Back to Iman - Alhamdulillah
As-salamu alaykum. A while back, atheism planted doubts in my heart, but about 20 years ago I read an article that really steadied me - Alhamdulillah it’s kept me firm since. I’m sharing a rephrased version of its main points in case it helps someone else. If you find this helpful, please share and make dua so it reaches those who need it - you might help protect someone’s Imaan. Does a Creator Exist? Millions of kinds of plants and animals show signs pointing to the existence and greatness of our Creator. Each creature has its own body systems, defence methods, feeding habits, and ways of reproducing. We can’t cover everything here, but a few examples make clear that life cannot be explained by mere chance. From Caterpillar to Butterfly Silkworms lay hundreds of eggs at once - around 450–500 - and they protect them with a sticky thread they produce so the eggs aren’t scattered. When caterpillars hatch, they find a safe branch and attach themselves with the same thread, then spin cocoons using thread they secrete. In just a few days a newly hatched caterpillar can spin 900–1,500 metres of thread and begin the complex process of metamorphosis to become a butterfly. It’s hard to explain the mother’s ability to produce the protective thread, the newborn’s immediate instinct to find the right place, or the flawless metamorphosis as random events. Rather, it points to wisdom and design bestowed by Allah. Symmetry in Wings Butterfly wings show astonishing symmetry: patterns, spots and colours on one side match the other perfectly, right down to tiny dots. The colours come from many tiny scales layered on the wings. How these fragile scales are arranged identically on both sides without error, producing such beauty, suggests deliberate creation by the Almighty. The Giraffe’s Neck Giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as other mammals, yet their necks are long and function perfectly. Their hearts pump blood to great heights, and special valves prevent dangerous pressure surges when they lower their heads to drink. These coordinated systems could not work if they developed piecemeal; they point to purposeful design. Sea Turtles Sea turtles return to the same beach where they were born to lay eggs, sometimes travelling hundreds of kilometres and doing so decades later. Hatchlings, weighing around 31 grams, dig together to reach the surface and wait for nightfall before heading to the sea to avoid predators and scorching sand. How do they “know” to do all this? Their instinctive behaviour speaks to inspiration from their Creator. Bombardier Beetle The bombardier beetle defends itself chemically: it stores reactive substances separately and mixes them in a controlled chamber to produce a hot, noxious spray. The precise anatomy and timing required to avoid self-harm are astonishing. Such an internal chemical weapon, working reliably in a tiny insect, is best explained by intentional design. Termite Nests Termite mounds can rise 5–6 metres, with complex tunnels, ventilation, fungus farms and escape routes, built by blind insects just centimeters long. Thousands work together with perfect coordination. The engineering and cooperative behaviour shown by termites point toward a Creator rather than random chance. The Woodpecker Woodpeckers peck tree trunks 38–43 times in a few seconds without suffering brain injury. Their skulls, muscles and beaks are structured to absorb shock. They also choose older trees whose bark softens, and cavities around nests fill with resin that deters snakes. Their long sticky tongues reach ants and resist ant acids. All these features work together in harmony, showing purposeful creation. Camouflage and False Eyes Some animals blend so well with their surroundings that they’re nearly indistinguishable from leaves or twigs. Others have “false eyes” on wings or bodies that startle predators when revealed. These defence tactics are not things the animals plan consciously; they are instincts and features given to them by the Creator. Amazon Water Lilies Amazon water lilies grow from the muddy river bottom up to the surface, producing enormous leaves quickly and sending long stems up to reach oxygen and sunlight. Their buds know to form large leaves and even use beetles attracted to white flowers for pollination, closing and changing colour after one night to encourage cross-pollination. The coordinated sequence of growth, oxygen transport and pollination mechanisms points to wise design. Conclusion As Sir Fred Hoyle famously compared, the chance that life arose by pure coincidence is like a tornado assembling an airplane from a junkyard. The complexity and harmony of living systems - from tiny insects to large mammals and plants - lead us to one conclusion: the universe and its living beings are created with purpose. Reflecting on these signs, reason and faith together point to Allah as the Wise Creator. If this benefited you, please share it and make dua. May Allah guide us all and strengthen our Imaan. Ameen.
