How Accounts Will Be Settled on the Day of Resurrection, insha'Allah
As-salaamu `alaykum. When the Day of Resurrection arrives, a person's hasanaat (good deeds) will be his capital. If he has wronged others, their rights will be taken from his hasanaat according to the injustice done. If his hasanaat are exhausted, then some of their sayi`aat (bad deeds) will be placed upon him. The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) warned that anyone who hurts a fellow Muslim’s honour or rights should seek forgiveness before there are no more dinars or dirhams; otherwise, people will take from his good deeds, and if those run out, some of their sins will be added to his burden. This is what the Messenger (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) called bankruptcy: a person who comes on the Day of Judgment with prayer, fasting and zakah recorded for him, but who has belittled, slandered, taken the wealth of, harmed or beaten others. Their good deeds will be given to those he wronged, and when his good deeds finish, some of their sins will be placed on him and he will be cast into the Fire. If someone dies owing money, what he owes will be taken from his hasanaat, because there will be no currency in the hereafter. When people have wronged one another, the balance will be set straight: if both oppressed each other equally, there may be no claim left; if one still owes another, the owed person will receive his due. There is also the example of a man who mistreated his slaves: on the Day of Resurrection their misdeeds will be compared with his punishment of them. If his punishment matched their wrongdoing, nothing will remain to be settled; if his punishment was lighter, that will count in his favour; if it was harsher than their sins warranted, the excess will be counted against him. Because zulm (oppression) is so grave, those who fear that Day should abandon oppression and avoid it-the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) warned that zulm will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection. May Allah protect us from being among those whose good deeds are taken and whose burdens are increased. Ameen.
