Government Makes Muslim-Friendly Tourism a New Economic Growth Engine
The Indonesian government is shifting its national tourism strategy by making Muslim-friendly tourism a driver of economic growth. The focus isn't just on adding halal destinations, but on building an ecosystem that attracts spending from global Muslim travelers amid geopolitical changes.
Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana revealed that 15 provinces have potential to be developed as quality destinations based on the Indonesia Muslim Travel Index (IMTI). These provinces include Aceh, Riau, Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, DKI Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and DI Yogyakarta.
The government is also strengthening the digital ecosystem through the Muslim Friendly Travel page on Indonesia.travel and diversifying tourism products, like halal cuisine and spiritual wellness. Flagship events like the Aceh Ramadhan Festival and Muslim Life Fest are projected to become tourist magnets.
In addition to targeting OIC countries, the market strategy is being expanded to non-OIC ones like Japan, South Korea, and Australia. This makes Muslim-friendly tourism part of a bigger strategy to widen the international market share.
