Global Sumud Flotilla Humanitarian Aid Fleet Reported Intercepted by Israeli Military in International Waters
The Global Sumud Flotilla 2026 humanitarian mission, which was sailing towards Gaza, Palestine, is reported to have been intercepted and intimidated by Israeli military vessels while passing through international waters near Greece. According to reports from Aljazeera and Greenpeace International, the incident occurred in the waters west of the islands of Crete and Kythira, more than 1,000 kilometers from Israeli territory.
The crew reported receiving radio warnings identifying themselves as the Israeli Navy, demanding a change in course. Soon after, the fleet's communication systems were disrupted, including maritime emergency channels and navigation systems, significantly increasing the safety risk on the open sea. An SOS emergency signal was briefly transmitted by the crew.
Pujarini Sen, Project Lead on the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, emphasized the critical need for full protection for humanitarian aid. Greenpeace also stated that the Israeli government is imposing a blockade on international aid, which they consider a violation of international humanitarian law.
