Getting to Know the Five Pillars of Islam: The Foundation of Muslim Faith
The Pillars of Islam are the five main tenets that form the basis of belief and obligation for every Muslim. As narrated in a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'Islam is built on five things: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, establishing prayer, paying Zakat, performing Hajj, and fasting Ramadan.' (Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim).
The five pillars are: (1) Reciting the two testimonies of faith (Shahadah) as proof of belief in Allah and His Messenger; (2) Performing the five daily prayers (Salah), which are a primary form of worship; (3) Fasting during the month of Ramadan to increase piety; (4) Paying Zakat, both Zakat al-Mal (on wealth) and Zakat al-Fitr; and (5) Performing the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) for those who are physically and financially able.
Each pillar has a basis in the Quran and the Sunnah. For example, the command for prayer and Zakat is mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:43), while the obligation of Hajj for those who are able is stated in Surah Ali 'Imran (3:97). Understanding and implementing these five pillars forms the foundation for practicing Islamic law comprehensively.
