Gambus Misri Jombang Revives After 40 Years of Vacuum, Now Held as a Festival

A traditional art form from Jombang, Gambus Misri Bintang 9, is back on stage after around 40 years of hiatus through the Gambus Misri Festival 2026 in Kendalsari Hamlet, Kendalsari Village, Sumobito. This art, which blends music, dance, comedy, and Islamic stories, was created by the late Asfandi, a Tebuireng student, and had been dormant before being revived by the Air Kita Foundation in 2018. The organizing chair, Anasrul Hakim, said this festival aims to preserve culture and boost the local economy by involving local MSMEs. The hope is that Kendalsari Village can become an Educational Tourism Village for Gambus Misri. Jombang Deputy Regent Salmanudin appreciated the festival and stressed the importance of introducing Gambus Misri to the younger generation.
