Full Chronology of 5 Kopdes Manager Candidates Dying During Latsarmil, Ministry of Defense Explains Why the Program Continues
The basic military training (Latsarmil) in the selection of manager candidates for the Merah Putih Village Cooperative (Kopdes) and Merah Putih Fishermen Cooperative (KNMP) has drawn public attention after five participants died. Latsarmil is a mandatory stage of the program for the Indonesian Development Pioneer Scholars (SPPI).
The Head of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Ketut Gede Wetan, explained that this training aims to build leadership character, discipline, and professionalism. "This state defense and managerial training is directed at shaping character, discipline, and professionalism," he said on Saturday (27/6/2026).
He stressed that the training is not for military capability, but for mental readiness and the ability to face challenges in managing cooperatives that involve public funds. The aspects built include responsibility, fighting spirit, teamwork, and problem-solving.
One participant, Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq, died during education at the Baturaja Training Center of Kodiklatad on Wednesday (17/6/2026) after experiencing a loss of consciousness. The Ministry of Defense stated that the program will continue with evaluation.
