Fuel Shortage in North Sumatra Under Spotlight, Residents and City Government Push for Solutions
The shortage of subsidized fuel in North Sumatra is still ongoing. As of Thursday (7/16/2026), long lines of vehicles have been seen at a number of gas stations, including at the Kualanamu Airport gas station. Residents complain about having to wait for hours, with some even queuing from 3 in the morning until 6 in the evening.
Medan Mayor Rico Waas said he has coordinated with Pertamina to normalize fuel distribution soon. He stressed that the long lines can't drag on because they disrupt public activities and the economy.
North Sumatra Chamber of Commerce Chairman Firsal Dida Mutyara reminded that the fuel shortage affects the business world, especially logistics distribution chains, and could potentially trigger a ripple effect on the economy.
