Finding Peace from Shaytan's Whispers through the Quran - Assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Lately I've been dealing with heavy anxiety and those nagging waswas that feel like they're tailor-made to scare you. Sometimes it's constant doubt, fear of harm, or feeling trapped in a circle of intimidation. Islam teaches these are common tricks of Shaytan, who aims to fill hearts with fear and confusion so we turn away from Allah. The good news is the Quran gives us clear tools to push back. Shaytan's scare tactics are only convincing if we give them attention - his hold is weak against sincere believers. Allah says (paraphrased): do not fear those who frighten you; fear Me instead if you truly believe (Quran 3:175). Here are simple, practical steps from the Quran and Sunnah that I try to follow when the fear comes: 1) Seek refuge in Allah right away (Ta'awwudh) Say quietly or out loud: A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim. The Quran tells us to seek refuge before recitation (Quran 16:98). When the whispers start, say it - it helps break the cycle. The Prophet ﷺ said Shaytan runs away when we seek refuge sincerely. 2) Build tawakkul - trust Allah Shaytan wants you to feel alone. Remind yourself: Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel. Trusting Allah while acting rightly weakens fear. Tawakkul isn’t doing nothing; it’s doing what’s right and leaving the outcome to Allah. 3) Recite protective verses and surahs regularly Make a habit of morning/evening recitation: Ayat al-Kursi (2:255), the last two verses of Al-Baqarah (2:285-286), Al-Falaq and An-Nas (113–114). The Prophet ﷺ encouraged these for protection. When fear hits, pause and recite one - Allah's words are stronger than any whisper. 4) Keep up with dhikr Remembering Allah scatters Shaytan. Short phrases like SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, or La ilaha illallah help calm your heart. The Quran notes those who remember Allah gain insight when Satan touches them (Quran 7:201). 5) Don’t engage the whispers Arguing or obsessing with waswas only strengthens it. The Prophet ﷺ advised to seek refuge and stop thinking about it. Starve the whispers by turning attention back to Allah and useful action. 6) Combine spiritual steps with practical care Pray on time, keep good company, make dua for protection (ask Allah to remove anxiety, sorrow and weakness). If things feel beyond your control - whether severe anxiety or suspected jinn-related issues - use ruqyah (Quranic recitation) and also see a qualified professional like a therapist or doctor. Islam supports both spiritual and medical help. Final reminder: Shaytan's fear tactics are ultimately weak (Quran 4:76). These tests can purify and strengthen faith (Quran 29:2-3), and with hardship comes ease (Quran 94:5-6). Allah is nearer to us than we think (Quran 50:16). May Allah shield us from Shaytan's whispers, replace our fears with peace, and make us among those who rely on Him. Ameen. If you've struggled with this too, share what helped you - your duas or favorite verses - so we can support each other. Jazakum Allahu khayran.
