Events of Muharram: The Story of Prophet Moses' Escape from Pharaoh and the Origins of the Ashura Fast
Muharram is a special month in Islam, where Muslims are encouraged to do more good deeds, including the Ashura fast on the 10th of Muharram. This recommendation stems from the event where Prophet Moses (AS) was saved from Pharaoh and his army's pursuit.
Prophet Moses got the task from Allah SWT to free the Children of Israel from the oppression of the tyrannical Pharaoh. During their escape, they were trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's chase. By Allah's command, Prophet Moses struck his staff, splitting the sea so they could cross. Then the sea closed back and drowned Pharaoh and his troops, as mentioned in the Quran, Surah Taha verse 77 and Ash-Shu'ara verses 63-66.
As a form of gratitude, Prophet Moses and his followers fasted on that day. This tradition continued up to the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). When he arrived in Medina, the Prophet noticed the Jews fasting on Ashura. He then said that Muslims have a greater right to observe this fast, as recorded in a hadith by Bukhari and Muslim.
This event carries lessons, like: a test for every believer, destruction for God's enemies, the certainty of His promises, the power of faith, and the duty to be grateful for blessings. All of that serves as a reminder for Muslims to always be devout and trust in Allah's help.
