EU urges respect for ceasefire after strikes in southern Lebanon - As-salāmu ʿalaykum
As-salāmu ʿalaykum. The European Union has criticised recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and has called on Israel to honour the ceasefire that was agreed last year.
Israeli forces carried out new attacks on Thursday, saying they were targeting the Iran-backed group and accusing it of rearming. The EU’s foreign affairs spokesman, Anouar El Anouni, said the union calls on Israel to stop actions that violate resolution 1701 and the ceasefire reached in November 2024. He also urged all Lebanese parties, especially Hezbollah, to refrain from steps that might escalate tensions further.
He added that everyone should focus on preserving the ceasefire and the progress made so far. The Israeli army had warned residents in four villages to leave buildings, saying it planned strikes against what it called military infrastructure of the group.
Lebanon’s army accused Israel of trying to undermine the country’s stability with the attacks and of obstructing the army’s deployment under the ceasefire. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes, and Iran criticised them as brutal and asked the international community to step in.
Technically Lebanon and Israel remain at war, but recent fighting with Israel has been carried out by Hezbollah rather than the Lebanese military. Hezbollah is the only movement that did not disarm after the 1975–1990 civil war, saying it needed to confront Israeli occupation and later to defend Lebanon. The group is supported by Iran, which itself fought Israel earlier this year.
May Allah protect civilians and guide leaders toward a just and lasting peace.
