EU launches renewed plan to deepen ties with Mediterranean neighbours
As-salamu alaykum - The EU has rolled out a fresh effort to strengthen relations with North African and other Mediterranean countries, offering investments, deeper cultural links and cooperation on migration. The European Commission presented a “Pact for the Mediterranean” that highlights areas like energy, clean technology and education where the 27-member bloc wants closer collaboration with its southern neighbours.
Ursula von der Leyen said the EU is making a clear offer to its neighbours and wants to build a shared Mediterranean space with gradual integration. The pact focuses on roughly 10 countries, including Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, Syria and Algeria, and proposes steps such as setting up a Mediterranean University to boost student exchanges and initiatives to support start-ups.
It also brings together recent agreements Brussels made with Tunisia, Libya and others, offering aid and investments in return for cooperation on migration. A key part is tackling irregular crossings through better border management and efforts to disrupt migrant smuggling.
Officials say the goal is to create conditions so young people can stay at home if they want, while also opening legal, safe pathways to come to Europe. Brussels hopes the consulted countries will endorse the pact next month so it can be turned into an action plan with concrete measures. Insha'Allah this leads to real, practical cooperation that helps communities on both shores.
