DPR: Vigilantism Undermines the Principles of a Law-Governed State
Member of House Commission XIII, Saadiah Uluputty, expressed regret over the death of a man in Tabanan, Bali, who was mobbed over alleged chicken theft. She emphasized that vigilantism violates the principles of a law-governed state and takes away the right to life and a fair legal process. "Indonesia is a country of law, not one that hands over the justice process to the mob," she said.
Saadiah also reminded that this case should be viewed from the lens of poverty. If the theft was driven by economic pressure, the government needs to evaluate social protection. "Law enforcement must proceed, but social policies also need to be strengthened," she said. She urged local governments and relevant ministries to ensure that the victim's children continue to receive education, basic needs, and psychological support.
