Deported from RI, Abdul Miqdad Allegedly Mastermind Behind Planned Attack on Israeli Sites in Cyprus
Abdul Karim Miqdad (41) was deported from Indonesia to Cyprus on July 17, 2026 after being arrested based on an Interpol Red Notice. Cypriot police accused him of being the mastermind of a network planning attacks against Israeli interests in Cyprus. Three other Palestinians are currently on trial in Cyprus related to the plot.
The Geneva Council for Rights and Liberties (GCRL) voiced concerns over the swift deportation process and the potential extradition of Miqdad to Israel. GCRL highlighted alleged violations of Miqdad's rights, including lack of information about the charges and evidence.
The Indonesian government requested assurances from Cyprus that Miqdad would not be handed over to a third party. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that Cyprus guaranteed this. Yusril also emphasized that Miqdad is not a cleric or activist, but a Palestinian businessman, and that the deportation was carried out according to Interpol mechanisms.
