Concern about the prevalence of scams in online communities

Assalamu alaikum, I've been noticing that I often receive messages from people asking for financial assistance or donations, and they even provide bank details. Many of these seem to come from countries like Gambia and South Africa. It makes me wonder if any of these requests are actually genuine. Also, from an Islamic perspective, would it be considered a sin to decline these appeals for help?
