BMKG Issues Early Warning for High Waves in Several NTB Waters, Southern Indian Ocean Reaches 4 Meters

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (ZAM) Meteorological Station has issued an early warning for high waves in a number of waters in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This warning is valid from July 28, 2026, at 08:00 WITA until July 29, 2026, at 08:00 WITA. The Southern Indian Ocean off NTB could see waves as high as 2.5 to 4 meters (high category). Meanwhile, waves of 1.25–2.5 meters are expected in the southern part of the Lombok Strait, the southern part of the Alas Strait, the waters south of Sumbawa, and the southern part of the Sape Strait. Other waters, like the northern part of the Lombok Strait, are forecast to have wave heights of 0.5–1.25 meters. BMKG urges the public to be alert for potential waves reaching 2 meters or more, especially in the southern Lombok Strait, southern Alas Strait, southern Sape Strait, waters south of Sumbawa, and the Southern Indian Ocean off NTB. In addition, BMKG reminds of the risks to shipping safety: fishing boats need to be careful if wind speeds exceed 15 knots and waves above 1.25 meters; barges are at risk when winds exceed 16 knots and waves above 1.5 meters; ferries if winds exceed 21 knots and waves above 2.5 meters; and large ships like cargo and cruise vessels if winds exceed 27 knots and waves over 4 meters.
