Assalamu alaikum - the former head of Azerbaijan's administration has been detained on serious charges
Assalamu alaikum. In Baku, a court has approved the arrest of former head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Ramiz Mehtiev, local sources report.
If the court finds him guilty, he could face life imprisonment. He's accused in three serious cases: treason, an attempt to seize power, and legalizing illegally acquired assets.
Mehtiev led the presidential administration for almost 25 years (1995–2019). After his resignation he became head of the National Academy of Sciences and stayed in that position until 2022.
Against the backdrop of talks between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, Russia and Azerbaijan exchanged detained citizens - which, they say, helped ease tensions in bilateral relations.
At the end of August in Armenia, MFA employee Ashkhen Aleksanyan was arrested on charges of treason - she’s suspected of working for Azerbaijan.
