The sides accuse each other of escalating the conflict. Reports say that on Saturday evening gunfire and explosions were heard in Kunar, Nangarhar and Helmand provinces; the Afghan Defense Ministry said it was carrying out a "reprisal operation" in response to Pakistani airstrikes and violations of airspace. Conflicts along the roughly 2,600 km common border are quite frequent - they often lead to suspended trade and long queues at crossing points. This current flare-up coincided with the Afghan foreign minister’s visit to India, which Pakistan sees as its main opponent, and that added to the tension. Pakistani authorities expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution to "this complicated but solvable problem."
