Assalamu Alaikum - I Can’t Sleep, How Can I Rest Better?
Assalamu Alaikum - Tired of struggling to sleep? Feel like you’re walking around like a zombie every day? Want to actually rest well? Do you have trouble falling asleep, or does your mind keep replaying the day so you lie awake for hours? Poor sleep can bring: 1. A bad mood. 2. Low physical and mental energy. 3. Less chance of having a good day. If your sleep is only so-so, your days will likely be so-so too. Here are some simple tips that helped me - try them, and if you like your current sleep, you can of course ignore them. First tip: Move I know it sounds obvious, but if your body is pleasantly tired, you’re more likely to fall asleep faster and sleep deeper. You don’t need a two-hour gym session. Just add a bit more physical activity to your day. Walking is great - free, easy, and you can listen to nasheeds, a podcast, or talk with a family member while you walk. Stand more during the day, take a short walk after work, or do light exercise. When your body is tired, your mind has less energy to keep you awake. Second tip: Limit unproductive thoughts Try to keep your mind calmer as bedtime approaches. Constantly thinking about work or school during your non-working hours builds mental fatigue and gives your brain more fuel to chatter at night. Aim to set boundaries: unless you’re actively solving a problem, try not to rehearse work scenarios or over-plan in your free time. Also remember: you can only control your actions, not other people. Worrying endlessly won’t change that. Practice letting go of things outside your control - it helps your mind settle. Third tip: Reduce screen time before bed We all rely on phones and computers, but too much screen exposure close to bedtime can make it harder to wind down. Try to limit digital activity in the hour or so before sleep. Combine this with scheduling any work-related thinking earlier in the day so your mind is less likely to get triggered by notifications or late-night browsing. Fourth tip: Spend quiet time with yourself Replace some pre-bed phone time with reflection, simple dhikr, or quiet reading of beneficial reminders. Getting to know your inner self, remembering Allah, and reflecting on your day can bring a lot of calm. Self-awareness and turning to faith can be a powerful source of peace when everything feels chaotic. Even short moments of sincere remembrance or dua before sleep can comfort you and reduce anxiety. Quick recap: 1. Move a little more each day. 2. Limit unproductive thinking in your off-hours. 3. Cut down screen time before bed. 4. Spend time in reflection, dhikr, or quiet dua. May Allah grant you peaceful, restorative sleep. If you want, tell me what your evening routine looks like and I can suggest small changes.
