Assalamu alaikum - Azerbaijan has lifted restrictions on transit to Armenia
Assalamu alaykum. Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev announced an important step toward normalizing relations with Armenia. At a joint press conference with Kazakhstan’s president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev he said all restrictions on transit of goods to the neighboring country have been completely lifted.
According to the head of state, those bans were in place since the occupation during the period of military actions. A practical confirmation of the new policy was the first transit cargo - Kazakh grain - which passed through Azerbaijan into Armenia.
“I want to say that Azerbaijan has lifted all restrictions on transit of goods to Armenia that existed since the time of occupation, and the first such transit cargo was a shipment of Kazakh grain to Armenia,” Ilham Aliyev said.
The president expressed hope that this shows a move from formal agreements to real actions. “I think this is a good sign that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia is now not only on paper, but also in practice,” he concluded.
For a long time direct transit through Azerbaijani territory was blocked because of the conflict, and Armenia was effectively cut off from direct overland routes from the east - from Azerbaijan, Central Asia and China. Now, in sha Allah, the opening of transit may help restore the exchange of goods and economic ties between the peoples.
