Assalaamu alaikum - Türkiye’s arrest warrants for Israeli officials praised as a step toward justice
Assalaamu alaikum. Palestine has welcomed Türkiye’s issuance of arrest warrants for 37 Israeli officials and described the move as an important step toward justice, urging other nations to follow Ankara’s lead.
The warrants announced by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office name several senior Israeli figures, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Army Chief Eyal Zamir, and Naval Commander David Saar Salama.
Hamas praised the action on Friday, calling it a rightful stand by the Turkish people and their leadership.
“This honorable step reflects the noble stance of the Turkish people and their leaders, consistent with justice, compassion, and brotherhood with our oppressed Palestinian brothers and sisters,” the group said, and it urged other states to take similar measures.
“We call on nations and their judicial institutions to issue legal warrants to pursue the leaders responsible for the occupation’s crimes and to bring them before the courts to be held accountable for crimes against humanity,” Hamas added.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s decision.
“This bold legal move is a victory for justice and shows the resolve of free nations and leaders who refuse to accept impunity granted to some,” the ministry said. It emphasized that the step “reinforces the principle of universal jurisdiction in addressing war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
The ministry noted that the Turkish judiciary’s actions reflect a principled legal and moral position and send a clear message that those responsible for crimes against the Palestinian people will not evade accountability, no matter their rank.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Since October 2023, more than 69,000 people-many of them women and children-were reported killed and over 170,000 wounded during the assault in Gaza before the ceasefire on October 10, and reports say the truce has still been violated at times.
May Allah guide us toward justice and ease the suffering of the oppressed. Wa alaikum assalaam.
