Assailants Injure Three Police Officers in Roadside Blast in Pakistan’s Northwest - As-Salamu Alaikum
As-Salamu Alaikum. PESHAWAR - Three police officers were wounded after an improvised explosive device (IED) struck a police convoy in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said on Sunday.
Hangu, which borders Afghanistan, has seen an increase in militant activity in recent years. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, in a statement from his office, urged authorities to ensure the injured officers receive immediate and the best possible medical care. “Those who carry out such cowardly attacks will be held to account,” he said, and asked the provincial police chief for a detailed report. He also paid tribute to the bravery and dedication of the police.
The chief minister instructed officials to strengthen security measures across the province and to remain vigilant against suspicious elements.
Militancy in KP rose after a fragile truce between the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and the state broke down in November 2022. Since then, the TTP and other armed groups have continued attacks on security forces, along with targeted killings and kidnappings of law enforcers and officials.
Islamabad has repeatedly accused neighbouring Afghanistan of providing sanctuary to anti-Pakistan groups that stage cross-border attacks, an allegation Afghan authorities deny.
Last month the two countries clashed heavily along their long border amid the uptick in violence, causing dozens of casualties on both sides before a ceasefire was agreed in Doha on Oct. 19. Officials plan to meet again on Nov. 6 to discuss a way to control militant activity in border areas.
Earlier the same day, a police constable was killed and two others wounded when explosives detonated inside a Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) police station in Peshawar, a police official said. Capital City Police Officer Dr. Mian Saeed said initial checks suggest some explosive material stored in the station’s storeroom exploded.
