As-salamu alaykum - Rain and high humidity expected in parts of the UAE in coming days
As-salamu alaykum. Heads up: some parts of the UAE are likely to see rain and strong winds over the next few days, along with rising humidity, insha'Allah.
The National Centre of Meteorology is predicting showers in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah on Monday and Tuesday. Wind gusts could reach about 40 km/h in places on Monday, which may create dusty conditions and reduce visibility.
The rain probably won't reach Abu Dhabi or Dubai’s coasts, but after such a dry year it will be welcomed by many. Mosques around the country held salat al-istisqa (rain prayers) on Friday following the guidance of President Sheikh Mohamed - a practice communities in the Gulf turn to when rainfall has been scarce.
This year has been one of the driest on record so far, and April and May broke temperature records. Humidity could peak near 91% in Sweihan (Al Ain) on Sunday, and may climb to about 85% in Abu Dhabi and Dubai next week.
A quick note on what that means: relative humidity is the share of water vapour in the air compared with the maximum the air can hold at a set temperature. For example, 50% means the air holds half of what it could; 100% means the air is saturated and can't take more moisture. High humidity makes it harder for sweat to evaporate, so our bodies cool less effectively and conditions feel sticky.
Warmer seas are driving much of this - more evaporation - and hotter land temperatures let the air hold more moisture. Temperatures will slowly ease as the year goes on, but expect daytime highs to stay in the mid-to-high 30s for the next few days, with a possible 37°C in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on Thursday. The Northern Emirates will be a bit cooler but still above 30°C through the week.
Take care when travelling in windy, dusty conditions and keep an eye on local forecasts and advisories. May Allah grant us beneficial rain and safety for everyone, insha'Allah.
