Anwar Usman Stresses Constitutional Court Ruling 90 is for All Young People, Not Just Gibran
Former Constitutional Court Justice Anwar Usman provided clarification regarding Constitutional Court Decision Number 90/PUU-XXI/2023, which had sparked controversy during the 2024 presidential election. He emphasized that the ruling was not a special 'gateway' for his nephew, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to become a vice-presidential candidate, but was intended to provide space for all young people in Indonesia. This statement was made following his retirement ceremony at the Constitutional Court building in Jakarta on Monday (April 13, 2026).
Anwar explained that the decision was made based on a belief in truth and justice, which he considers a mandate from God. He also denied any conflict of interest in the decision-making process, citing a statement by former Constitutional Court Justice Prof. Arief Hidayat that the concept of conflict of interest is not recognized in judicial reviews of laws.
Regarding the controversy, Anwar stated he felt relieved because his dignity and reputation had been restored through a ruling by the Jakarta State Administrative Court. He stressed that his familial relationship with Gibran did not influence the decision, noting that their meetings were very infrequent and only occurred at specific events like weddings or incidental encounters.
