Albanian PM: Russia Unlikely to Attack Other European Nations - A Call for EU Diplomacy
As-salamu alaykum. I saw an interview with Albania’s prime minister, Edi Rama, and wanted to share the gist in a simple way. He told reporters at a Berlin conference that he thinks it would be “completely stupid” for any country to attack EU or NATO members, and that Russia won’t attack Albania or other European nations. He said NATO is prepared for any aggression and remains the strongest military force for now.
Rama warned that Russia is provoking the EU and its neighbors along the border, with incidents like suspected drone flights and disputed airspace encounters raising tensions. He noted that some Eastern European states feel under more pressure and are on high alert, while Albania hasn’t reported such incidents and doesn’t feel threatened - he said there’s no sympathy for Russian hostilities in his country.
He also criticised the EU for not having a clear peace plan for Ukraine and urged the bloc to pursue its own diplomacy. With efforts from the United States and others to secure a ceasefire, Rama suggested EU leaders should find a way to talk to Russia and promote a European vision of peace.
The Western Balkans remain uneasy about a possible spillover from the war in Ukraine. Rama and other regional leaders have been discussing reforms and EU accession progress; EU officials have praised advances in Albania and Montenegro, and Rama felt the EU’s openness to the Balkans has improved since the conflict began.
