Acehnese Community in the US Buys Church Building to Convert into Mosque and Islamic Center
An Acehnese community residing in the United States has purchased a church building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to repurpose into a mosque and Islamic Center. This information was shared by the X account Barish (@as_siglie) on Friday (1/5/2026), featuring a video of the building set to become a religious activity center, known in Acehnese tradition as a meunasah.
The former church building is designed not only as a place of worship but also as a center for social activities, education, and youth development for the Muslim diaspora. Reports mention the purchase process was carried out gradually through community fundraising, with a down payment of around US$56,000 from a total price of approximately US$1.75 million.
This transformation reflects the creative adaptation efforts of the Muslim diaspora in meeting community needs, while also strengthening Islamic identity and brotherhood in a multicultural environment. The existence of such facilities is hoped to serve as a means for inclusive and peaceful Islamic outreach, as well as supporting the religious life of the Indonesian community abroad.
