Why is the Kaaba the Qibla for Muslims? Here's the History and Its Evidence
The Kaaba became the qibla for Muslims based on Allah's revelation in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 144, as an answer to the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) wish. That verse commands facing the Sacred Mosque during prayer, replacing the previous qibla towards Baitul Maqdis. This command is reaffirmed in verses 149-150.
The change of qibla happened about 16-17 months after the migration to Medina, before which the Prophet and his companions prayed facing Baitul Maqdis. The Prophet had hoped the qibla would be shifted to the Kaaba, which was eventually granted through revelation.
The wisdom behind this shift includes testing faith, affirming Muslim identity, honoring the Kaaba as the first house of worship, and showing that religious law comes from Allah. The Kaaba itself was built by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS), with its original foundations laid by Prophet Adam (AS).
