Two Powerful M7.1 and 7.5 Quakes Rock Venezuela, Triggering Tsunami Warning
Two massive earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) at 6:04 p.m. local time. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the first quake at magnitude 7.1, followed by a second 7.5 tremor a minute later. The first quake's epicenter was in Carabobo State, about 20 km from the capital Caracas.
The shaking triggered a tsunami warning, which was lifted a few hours later. The tremors were felt as far as Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. Videos on social media showed many buildings cracked, heavily damaged, and collapsed, leaving thousands of people traumatized and reluctant to return to their apartments.
Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed several building collapses. Authorities are still checking the affected areas, so the full extent of the damage isn't yet known.
