Trying to Understand This Quran Verse About Bani Israel and Noah's People
Salam everyone. I was reading Surah Al-Isra, and verse 3 really got me thinking. Allah says, addressing Bani Israel: "O descendants of those We carried with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant." It just keeps puzzling me. We're always taught that Bani Israel are the children of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him, right? But Ya'qub came much, much later than Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him. So why would Allah connect their lineage all the way back to those who were saved with Nuh? I've always heard the common explanation from both our Islamic talks and from what the Jewish tradition says, that 'Israel' is another name for Ya'qub. But this ayah makes me wonder if it's more than that. Maybe "Israel" was a title or a name for someone from the time of Nuh? That would mean Bani Israel are a nation with a much older history, not just a family that grew big in Egypt. It also makes you think about the numbers. The story says about 70 people went to Egypt and then, a few hundred years later, millions left with Musa (Moses), peace be upon him. That's a huge increase! Maybe the people with Musa weren't just the literal, biological grandchildren of Ya'qub, but were part of this older, larger group that was already there? Has anyone come across this kind of discussion in the classical tafsirs or from our scholars? I'd love to know your thoughts or if you've read anything about this angle. Jazakum Allahu khayran.
