Thousands of Surabaya Students Rally with 16 Demands, from Stopping MBG to Revoking TNI/Polri Law
A crowd of students from various universities in Surabaya staged a protest in front of the Grahadi State Building on Wednesday (6/17). They were protesting government policies they see as harmful to the people and threatening democracy.
The rally was joined by students from Unair, UPN Veteran Jatim, Unesa, Umsura, and the Surabaya BEM Alliance. The demonstrators voiced their aspirations through speeches and carried posters. One speaker called the protest an act of worship through resistance.
They criticized the security forces for not focusing on their main duties, and demanded the halt of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program and the Red-and-White Village Cooperatives. They also urged the revocation of the Police Law and the Military Law.
A total of 16 demands were put forward, including strengthening the Corruption Eradication Commission, passing the Asset Forfeiture Bill and the Indigenous Peoples Bill, rejecting militarism, freeing political prisoners, and a government apology to the people. The protest caused the closure of Jalan Yos Sudarso and traffic diversions.
