The Ruling on a Wife Refusing Her Husband's Invitation to Intimacy in Islam
In Islam, the relationship between husband and wife isn't just about keeping the household harmonious-it's also a form of worship. A wife is encouraged to respond to her husband's call, and refusing without a valid reason according to sharia is considered nushuz or disobedience. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "If a husband invites his wife to bed and she refuses without reason, causing him to spend the night angry, the angels curse her until dawn." (Narrated by Abu Hurairah).
But Islam prioritizes fairness. The wife is not sinful if she refuses for a sharia-approved reason like menstruation, postpartum bleeding, illness, severe exhaustion, psychological issues, if the husband is forcing her harshly, or if he neglects his duty to provide. The husband is obligated to treat his wife kindly and understand her situation. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa: 19: "And live with them in kindness."
If a wife is nushuz without a clear reason, she could lose her right to maintenance. The Quran (An-Nisa: 34) teaches steps for a husband dealing with nushuz: advise her, sleep apart, and as a last resort, a light strike that doesn't cause harm, within strict fiqh limits.
