The president of Lebanon called on the army to defend the south from new attacks.
As-salamu alaykum. After yet another destructive incursion by the Israeli army into southern Lebanon, which resulted in the death of a municipal employee, President Joseph Aoun ordered the armed forces to counter any future acts of aggression from Israel. According to The Guardian, this is the first such order since the ceasefire agreement at the end of 2024.
The deceased, Ibrahim Salameh, worked in the municipality of Blida near the Israeli border, where the military broke in. AFP reports that in the room where Salameh was sleeping, the mattresses were bloodied and the walls had bullet holes. This killing sparked a strong reaction throughout the country.
A few hours after the raid, Israel carried out airstrikes on Labun in southwestern Lebanon. Locals also noted Israeli drones flying low over Beirut. Previously, the Lebanese army has tried to avoid open clashes with Israeli forces, who claim that their targets are Hezbollah fighters and assets during each offensive. Now, the president has made it clear that he does not intend to tolerate such raids any longer - he instructed the army to "counter any Israeli incursion into the liberated southern territory to protect Lebanese land and the safety of its citizens."
Let me remind you that what happened goes against the ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel from November 2024, which was supposed to involve the withdrawal of troops and cessation of hostilities.
May Allah protect the people and grant peace to regions affected by violence. We pray for the deceased and for the swift return of safety for the civilians.
