The flow of migrants heading to Ceuta, Spain's territory in North Africa, has surged sharply. Around 60,000 people tried to enter the area from Morocco, driven by economic pressure and misleading info on social media claiming Spain opened a path for permanent residency. In reality, the Spanish Supreme Court ruling only bans immediate expulsion without legal process, not granting automatic residency rights.
Economic pressures in Morocco, especially youth unemployment, push many to take risks. Moroccan teenager Ayoub El Abyad (16) admits being spurred by viral content that misinterpreted the court ruling. The Spanish government responded by tightening border security, stressed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Speculation arose about the attitude of Moroccan authorities that seemed less strict, recalling a similar crisis in 2021. But Morocco denies political motives. This surge also coincides with the anniversary of Morocco's Throne Day, sparking suspicions of diplomatic signaling regarding Spain's policies, including ties with Algeria and citizenship for descendants of Western Sahara. Spain insists bilateral relations remain good.
