Thinking About Embracing Islam

Assalamu alaikum. I'm keen to learn about Islam. I'm a 22-year-old Brazilian, and I'm at a point where I'm rebuilding my life from the ground up. I'm done with just drifting along, repeating the same errors, and being trapped by bad habits and weakness. I've decided to look for a solid path, real discipline and structure, and that's exactly why Islam has grabbed my interest. Still, I've got some questions and need an honest talk: The wrong image: Society and the media paint a totally false picture of Muslims. I want to grasp what the faith is truly about, away from the stereotypes and nonsense people spread. My background: I've got a streetwise past, with a strict code of honor, loyalty, and what you might call a tough, almost rigid attitude when it comes to keeping your word and respecting those above you (I've survived harsh times, slept rough, and seen the dark side of life). How can someone with my mindset and history make peace with Islamic principles? Is Islam a good fit for men who have this more hard-edged profile, centered on honor and dignity, but who need proper guidance? I'm here to gain knowledge and find clarity, not to mess around.
