Senior Activist Supports Banyuwangi Police in Thoroughly Investigating Kalipuro’s C-Class Mine and Money Laundering
The Banyuwangi Police are getting props for their firm move in probing suspected violations at a C-class mine on the border of Klatak and Bulusan villages, Kalipuro sub-district. Rejowangi NGO head Eko Sukartono sees this investigation as a new chapter in environmental law enforcement in Banyuwangi.
Eko pointed out that the mine seemed untouchable before, despite repeated reports. The environmental damage is believed to be massive, with vast excavated land and depths of dozens of meters. "For a long time, there were reports but never any legal certainty," he said.
He urged investigators not only to apply articles on mineral and coal mining violations or environmental destruction, but also to trace the flow of funds all the way to money laundering. "Uncover it right down to the roots. Pursue it toward money laundering, so it becomes a lesson for everyone," he insisted.
Eko hopes that if this case is resolved thoroughly, including environmental restoration and money laundering, it could become a pilot project for law enforcement in East Java and even nationally.
