Saudi Arabia Plants Over 60,000 Trees in the Mecca Area to Enhance Comfort for Hajj Pilgrims
Saudi Arabia has carried out a massive greening program in the holy area of Mecca, with over 60,000 trees planted to green the Hajj worship sites. The program, executed by the Kidana Development Company, part of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, aims to create a cooler and more comfortable atmosphere for millions of pilgrims, while tripling the green space compared to the previous Hajj season.
The planting was done using a scientific approach, selecting plant species suited to Mecca's climate and efficient in water usage, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. Hajj and Umrah expert Ahmed Halabi noted that this step effectively reduces solar heat, lowers temperatures, and stabilizes the atmosphere for the comfort of pilgrims in worship, especially those from cold climate regions.
Environmental expert Faleh Al-Juhani added that vegetation not only beautifies the scenery but also tangibly reduces surface heat absorption, boosts natural shading, and improves air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide. This move reflects a strong commitment to delivering sustainable environmental solutions, creating worship areas that are more friendly and cool.
