Saiful Mujani Questioned by Metro Jaya Police Over Alleged Incitement: Worried Critical Voices Are Silenced

Political analyst Saiful Mujani answered a summons from the Metro Jaya Police as a reported witness in an alleged incitement case on Thursday (4/6). He showed up with lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis and others. Saiful said he's ready to clarify and stressed he’s never dodged the legal process. "If they need info, if the authorities call me, I’ll definitely come," he said. Saiful admitted he's worried this case isn't just about him, but also about academic freedom and free speech. "What I’m concerned about is if critical voices get silenced. This involves the community of academics and activists committed to national values," he said. He hopes this process becomes a moment to test our commitment to democracy. The case started from four police reports over statements Saiful made with Feri Amsari at a Halal Bihalal gathering in East Jakarta on March 31, 2026. The complainants see elements of Article 246 of the Criminal Code on incitement.
