Remembering Ryamizard Ryacudu: The Army Chief Who Led Directly in a Firefight with GAM
Indonesia lost retired General TNI Ryamizard Ryacudu, who passed away at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto, Jakarta, on Sunday (31/5/2026) at age 76. The former Army Chief of Staff and Defense Minister is remembered for his dedication, courage, and leadership.
On February 20, 2005, in Lhoknga, Aceh Besar, while the conflict with the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) was still ongoing, General Ryamizard, who was inspecting post-tsunami reconstruction, went straight to the site of a firefight. He went down to the field with a long-barreled weapon, led the pursuit, and was involved in a gun battle for about 15-30 minutes.
Captain CPM Anwar Riyadi recalled that moment as an unforgettable experience, and expressed gratitude that all personnel survived. Ryamizard's firm, brave leadership and closeness to his soldiers made him a respected figure.
His passing is a great loss for the TNI and the nation. His legacy of service and exemplary conduct will continue to inspire the next generation. Farewell, General. The Indonesian nation remembers your dedication.
