Order of Charity Recipients: From Yourself to Ibn Sabil

Islam strongly encourages charity as a deed with multiplied rewards. However, there is a priority order for charity recipients based on Quranic verses and hadith. First, make sure your own needs are met. Second, your family and close relatives. Third, orphans and the poor. Fourth, your closest neighbors. Fifth, those striving in the path of God (fi sabilillah). Sixth, ibn sabil and those in debt. The best times and ways to give charity include: when you're healthy, secretly, from the wealth you love most, and when you're in hardship. Also, ongoing charity like endowing land, building mosques, or spreading knowledge continues to earn rewards even after the giver has passed away.
