Observer Says PGR Starts to Use Anies Baswedan as a Political Commodity for 2029
The People's Movement Party (PGR), a new party gearing up for the 2029 election, is seen as starting to use Anies Baswedan as a political commodity. This was pointed out by public policy, law, and politics observer Damai Hari Lubis. According to him, after the Constitutional Court removed the presidential nomination threshold, PGR has a chance to nominate a president if it passes KPU verification. "If PGR successfully takes part in the election contest, it's very likely they'll put forward Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate in 2029," Damai wrote.
Damai highlighted that Anies doesn't hold a structural position in PGR, but is merely an inspirational figure. He thinks Anies understands PGR's political desires, but warns of the risks if he's only nominated by a novice party. Concerns arise from novice legislative candidates who are parasitic on the popularity of big figures to win legislative seats, but could switch support later on.
To anticipate this, Damai advises Anies to demand a firm commitment from the owners of PGR and other novice parties that are using his stature. He stresses that PGR can only be taken seriously if it manages to make Anies a presidential candidate supported by three to five major parties, not just gaining sympathy.
