NTT Earthquake Update: 47 People Dead, Residents Still Searching for Relatives in the Rubble
The magnitude 7.7 earthquake that shook northern Flores on Saturday (8/15) at 04:58 WIB caused casualties and damage in several districts of NTT. Based on preliminary data from BNPB, at least 47 people have died, with the most victims in Manggarai Regency (24 people) and East Manggarai (17 people).
Joint teams from the military, police, Basarnas, BPBD, volunteers, and the community continue to evacuate and search for victims. BNPB recorded 157 heavily damaged houses, 41 moderately damaged, and 148 lightly damaged, as well as damage to public facilities including 87 educational facilities and 18 health facilities.
BMKG recorded more than 235 aftershocks until Saturday afternoon, with the largest magnitude 6.2. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and not enter damaged buildings. Food and non-food assistance from BNPB has begun to be distributed, with a total of 50 thousand packages prepared.
The search for residents who have not been found is a major concern for the victims' families. The public is advised to follow official information from BMKG, BNPB, and local BPBD and not easily believe unverified news.
