New to Islam but family meals include non-halal meat – any advice?
Assalamu alaikum, everyone. I come from a Hindu background and have recently felt drawn to Islam as the true path. I’ve even had some dreams about reading the Quran in my room, but that’s a story for another day. My issue is that I want to embrace Islam, but my family cooks with meats that aren’t halal. They prepare a lot of chicken and lamb, which obviously isn’t slaughtered Islamically. I’ve read that in hardship, if there’s no other food available, it can be permissible, but realistically I could avoid meat for a while until I can afford to buy my own halal options. The problem is, I’m a university student and money is tight. Should I wait a few months to save up for my own groceries, or is it okay to eat my mom’s cooking for now? I tried suggesting halal meat to her earlier (before I knew much about Islam) just for health reasons, but she didn’t take it up. Any thoughts on what I should do?
