Muslim Arbi: If Abu Janda Is Not Named a Suspect, Public Trust in Law Enforcement Will Collapse
BANDA ACEH – Political and legal observer Muslim Arbi stressed the importance of firm and professional action by law enforcement in handling the alleged hate speech report against social media activist Permadi Arya (Abu Janda). The complaint was filed by the central board of the Minangkabau Family Association to the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim).
Muslim Arbi said that if Abu Janda isn’t named a suspect despite an official report and evidence, public trust in law enforcement in Indonesia will crumble. He sees this case as touching on ethnic, religious, racial, and intergroup (SARA) sensitivities that could trigger divisions.
Authorities are urged to show independence and not be selective, considering many ordinary people are quickly legally processed in similar cases. “The law shouldn’t just be sharp downward but blunt upward or toward certain parties close to power,” he said.
The report is registered under number LP/B/230/V/2026/SPKT/Bareskrim Polri dated May 26, 2026, following Abu Janda’s viral statement that offended people in West Sumatra and West Java. Muslim Arbi reminded that Indonesia is a diverse nation, so speech that stigmatizes certain groups must not be ignored for the sake of unity.
