Muhammadiyah Cadre Ananto Isworo Wins 2026 Kalpataru Through Mosque-Based Waste Alms Movement
Muhammadiyah cadre and staff at the Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah Central Executive Office, Ananto Isworo, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Kalpataru Award. This highest environmental award from the government recognizes his dedication since 2013 to developing a mosque-based Waste Alms Movement that blends religious values with environmental care.
Ananto says that using a religious approach and community empowerment through houses of worship is effective in tackling waste issues. The movement has been replicated by hundreds of communities, with around 300 mosques across Indonesia involved, including 532 communities in Bantul.
He hopes Muhammadiyah can make environmental issues a habit through its thousands of mosques, schools, universities, hospitals, and other charitable ventures. Ananto also encourages using assets like waqf land for the Muhammadiyah Forest Waqf program and transitioning to clean energy in education and health sectors.
The 2026 Kalpataru recognizes the struggle of turning waste into a social movement, showing houses of worship as hubs for change toward a sustainable environment.
